The Winter 2015 issue of Signs begins with a comparative perspectives symposium titled “Politics of the Sensing Subject: Gender, Perception, Art,” edited and introduced by Anne Keefe. Other articles in the issue explore new materialism; women who regret becoming mothers; emerging representations of autistic subjects; race, gender, and affect from a historical perspective; the affective labor of drag and nursing; and the contemporary relationship between the United States and India through US women’s memoirs. “Ethiopian painter Skunder Boghossian (1937-2003) is exemplary of African modernism’s Pan-Africanist ideological ambitions, its multilayered signification on diverse ancient and modern African, European, Arab and New World artistic and cultural traditions”. … – Chika Okeke-Agulu.
“Ghanian born, Ampofo-Anti’s sculptures are insistently architectonic, with each of them assuming the form of a mysterious tower or monument. But even as they seem to be products of a pure architectural fantasy, they also bear telling marks—in both their form and subject matter—of the artist’s capacious meditation on architectural models from Africa and the Americas”. – Chika Okeke-Agulu
“Nigerian artist Victor Ekpuk tests the limits of this afro-modernist heritage, even as it shows new possibilities of afrological aesthetics in the age of globalization. Ekpuk, like bebop artists in the United States, developed an improvisatory aesthetics but the motivations for this were different.         Where the formal tactics of bebop derives in part from the longstanding strive to forge a black art and culture from the European, African, Native American cultures brought into intense proximity by transcontinental migration, colonization, and slavery, Ekpuk’s script-based paintings and drawing-performances inspired by nsibidi ideographic forms from southeastern Nigeria anchors him to a specific historical and symbolic place and thus allows him to differentiate his work from a myriad of other similar conceptual and formal practices in the globalized, contemporary art world.” – Chika Okeke-Agulu.
“If there is anything the art of Boghossian, Ampofo-Anti, and Ekpuk tells us, it is that works of art reflect the complex, multiple consciousness and diversely constituted identities of the artists. It inevitably compels us to ponder anew that memorable question posed nearly a century ago by Countee Cullen, the Harlem Renaissance poet: “What is Africa to me?” To the extent that their individual responses are inscribed in their art, it is safe to say that as with their African American counterparts past and present, Africa remains for its artists a site of powerful imaginaries, a historical place to which they are bound by ancestry, and an idea that elicits powerful aesthetic and symbolic action”. – Chika Okeke-Agulu

WRESTLING WITH ANGELS, New Work by Kesha Bruce

For nearly a decade, Kesha Bruce has addressed issues surrounding African-American identity and spirituality in her work. The paintings on paper in her Wrestling with Angels series hint at an even deeper and more direct vein of inquiry into the nature of spiritual struggle in immediate confrontation with the contemporary world.
Inspired by the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with the angel, the 14 artworks depict two figures, of indistinguishable gender, who seem to be engaged in either an intimate dance or a violent struggle. In one work, a nearly transparent and elegantly rendered figure draws the second into a passionate embrace; while in another image, an ominous, imposing figure seems on the verge of striking a fatal blow.
With Bruce’s attention shifting more towards the exploration of contemporary spirituality, not surprisingly, the imagery in Wrestling with Angels has become more abstract. Each work is more an evocation of a psychological state than an illustration of a biblical narrative.
In stark contrast to Bruce’s past work, which combined photography, collage and text elements, these new works show real evidence of both the artist’s hand and personal impulses- intricate patterning and ornamentation collide with zones of chaotic brushwork; fluid washes of color overlap areas of stark linear mark-making, and even the paper itself literally buckles under the weight of the frenzied movement. The end result is a compelling synthesis of color and gesture, deeply informed by narrative, allegory and spirituality.
Wrestling With Angels will be up at Morton Fine Art through January 2nd, 2012

Morton Fine Art (MFA) is pleased to present Works with Paper, a group exhibition of new work by artists Nathaniel Donnett, Victor Ekpuk, Rosemary Feit Covey, GA Gardner, Laurel Hausler, Choichun Leung, Mario Andres Robinson and Vonn Sumner. The exhibition will be on display from September 14th through October 9th, 2012. The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 14th from 6 to 8 pm.

Works with Paper explores traditional and non-traditional use of paper in fine artwork.  Traditional mediums include watercolor, pastel and acyrlic work on paper. Non-traditional mediums include paper bags, layered wood engravings, coffee stained paper with sewing, and collage with paper.  Highlights of the exhibition include new cityscapes by Vonn Sumner, first view work on paper by Choichun Leung, new works from Mario Andres Robinson’s ongoing series of his muse “Plum”, cut out collage weaves by GA Gardner, innovative exploration of surface by Laurel Hausler and Rosemary Feit Covey, and artwork by artists Nathaniel Donnett and Victor Ekpuk which will also be on display at Morton Fine Art’s Fahrenheit Booth F7 at the Houston Fine Art Fair.

“I use ‘bleeding’ tissue paper, water and archival pulp substrate to capture the chaotic movement of water and color blending on a spinning surface. By mounting my project on a potter’s wheel, I’m able to stand above my work, and while in motion use the wet tissue like a brush. As the wheel turns at different velocities and intervals, the ink spreads and mixes with other colors while simultaneously the intricate stains are absorbed into the pulp substrate permanently. The distribution of ink undergoing circular motion evolves in such a way that the gradient of the paint density changes with time and regions such as attractors, islands or basins appear. The colors then escape to infinity forming chaos artwork.”—Maya Freelon Asante
