About Echoing Green
My work’s abstractions arise from the subjects I portray: ecological and geological cycles, processes of chemical corrosion and natural efflorescence. With roots in traditions of Chinese landscape painting, my monumentally sized paintings and installations evolve a fantastic, abstract vision of the natural world. My latest work confronts the challenge: the resuscitation of landscape painting in a world where “landscape” is represented and defined through an ever-widening field of digital, graphic, and visual forms. How can a painting capture flux, abundance, waste, fertility, and the collision and collusion of diverse forms? How can it respond to the pressure we place on our era’s fragile ecosystem? My paintings explore both questions by sustaining tension between what is artificial and what is natural, between what is chemical and what is biological, between organic and inorganic. The paper on which I paint is not only a recognition of a tradition of Chinese painting; it is also a medium of vulnerability and expansiveness, susceptible to crease and tear as well as to collage and collation. My own role in the creation of the paintings strikes a balance between the purposive and the protective. I trust to process, chance, and change, but I encourage, direct, and facilitate all of these. In my most recent work, I hope to live in the tradition of landscape painting, experiencing it for what it has always been: an occasion for radical experimentation and confrontation with the world, in the broadest sense of the term, that sustains us.

About KATHERINE TZU-LAN MANN
Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann received her BA from Brown University and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is the recipient of a Fulbright grant to Taiwan, the AIR Gallery and Lower East Side Printshop Keyholder Fellowships in New York, NY, and the Individual Artist Grant, Arts and Humanities Grant, Mayor’s Award and Hamiltonian Fellowship in Washington, DC. She has attended residencies at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Blue Sky Dayton, Vermont Studio Center, Salzburg Kunstlerhauss, Triangle Workshop, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Bemis Center for the Arts, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Facebook, and the Jaipur, India Carbon 12 Residency. Some of the venues where Mann has shown her work include the Walters Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Rawls Museum, the US consulate in Dubai, UAE, and the US embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon. Mann is currently an instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is represented by Morton Fine Art in Washington, DC.

About ASTRID KOHLER and Conflux
German painter ASTRID KOHLER combines old and new in her latest series Conflux. Artwork includes 19th century German portraits which have been over-painted with Kohler’s imaginative and playful images of perched birds and jumping baby ducks. Antique pastoral backgrounds have been layered with contemporary additions of leafy shoots of bamboo, and outlines of stylized, gold clouds.
Her still life paintings, some of which are layered with epoxy, are visually accentuated with dramatic pops of color, unexpected narrative elements and oftentimes contain animated wildlife. Her ten piece series “fucking Vogelkonig” features delicate birds masterly painted with a three-haired brush and then crowned with neon orange headdresses which juxtapose the artist’s incredible technical ability as a realist painter with fluid, gestural lines and attitude.
Kohler seeks new ways of arranging space and blending old and new to create tension for her creative inspiration. Conflux marks her first solo exhibition in the U.S. She is represented by Morton Fine Art in Washington, DC.

Morton Fine Art gallery has two exhibition spaces in Washington. one in Lower Adams Morgan, a neighbourhood which hosts many art and entertainment venues. The other is the entire city: every two years, the gallery staff curates a series of mobile exhibitions for the so-called *a pop-up project that might indeed pop up just about anywhere in Washington. But those who missed these itinerant shows should not be put off: the exhibited artworks can still be seen in the gallery’s permanent venue. *a pop-up project is only one of the initiatives undertaken by Morton Fine Art to innovate the contemporary art market and connect a wider audience to museum-quality artworks.

In the winter of 2011, Kesha Bruce awoke in the early morning hours to see a figure hovering silently at the foot of her bed. This brief moment of fascination, terror, and eventually wonder, has beenthe obsessive focus of her work for nearly three years. To date, Bruce has completed nearly 200 works based on The Guardians – a group of solemn, mysterious figures who act as watchers, keepers, and protectors.

About Kesha Bruce:
Sidestepping the weight and implications of formalized religion forthe better part of her career, Bruce’s work has explored the fertile territory of memory, mythology, African-American folklore, and magical-spiritual belief. With The Guardians her work makes a shift towards questioning not only the place of spiritual practice in contemporary culture, but also the place of genuine spiritual experience in contemporary art making.

As part of Bethesda’s Art Walk festivities, the “Fair Focus” Art Exhibition was an event for the community to enjoy unique masterpieces by reputable artists from all over the world, including Julia Fernandez-Pol.
The Argentinian-American artist grew up looking either under a microscope or through a telescope. Over time, Fernandez-Pol used those same observation techniques to create her paintings. After moving across the country to Los Angeles, Fernandez-Pol is establishing herself on a new coast and her work is just getting started.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase Patch: Who is Julia Fernandez-Pol?
Julia Fernandez-Pol: I think Julia the artist is allowing my eccentricity to be my important feature. One of the things for me is that I love the quirkiness and subtleties that come from nature. A lot of the experimentation comes from trying to find those unique characteristics in nature through a parallel world in paint.
Patch: What inspires your paintings?
Fernandez-Pol: Science, research and the idea of beauty and grotesque. I like when I start to get a little bit grossed out by my paintings, because then I know that I have gotten somewhere.
Patch: What do you like about your paintings shown at the “Fair Focus” Art Exhibition?
Fernandez-Pol: What I like about the work there is the idea of color and light coming from darkness. As much as I like the really intense, heavy and dense fields of paint, I think it is nice to see some space, especially in a world of digital culture.
Patch: Out of all of your paintings, which one did you have the most fun creating, and why?
Fernandez-Pol: I like to work on a lot of paintings at once, because if I am struggling with one painting then I can usually find the answer in another painting. I do a body of work in terms of using the dark fields and bioluminescent neon colors.
Patch: What do you love the most about painting?
Fernandez-Pol: I love when it is unexpected. There are so many ways to use paint and it’s like this never-ending exploration.
Patch: What could you see yourself doing if you were never introduced to painting?
Fernandez-Pol: I would want to be a neuroscientist. I love to know about the brain and I think that it is really important in my work.
Patch: What’s next for you?
Fernandez-Pol: I am out in Los Angeles; I moved here about three months ago. I am trying to work on more sculptures and develop other projects.
