About CHARLES WILLIAMS:

Charles Williams is a professional contemporary realist painter from Georgetown, South Carolina and a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art. From utilizing oils for the basis of landscapes, each painting captures his reflection of human emotions in response to and in sync with the natural environment.

Recent achievements and awards include a Hudson River Landscape Fellowship, featured work in the Artists Magazines 28th Annual Art Competition, honorable mention from Southwest Art Magazines 21 Emerging Under 31 competition, 2012 Winner of the Fine Art Category from Creative Quarterly, 2013 selected artist for 28th Positive Negative juried art exhibition at East Tennessee State University, juror/curated by Michael Ray Charles from PBS Ar21, one of 25 selected artists for 2012 Dave Bown Project in Chicago, juror/curated by Karl Hecksher, owner K5 Editions, New York, Andrea Karnes, curator at Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, Mary Kate O’Hare, curator American Art, Newark Museum, 2nd place Bluecanvas Publication international competition “Environments,” and featured cover artist of Composite and Professional Artist Magazine. Williams’ works has been shown in American Art Collector, Empty Magazine, Charleston Magazine, Grand Strand, Studio Visit, Bluecanvas and other national publications. He was recently interviewed and broadcast on ETV/ NPR station, entitled: Nature Through the Eyes of an Artist.

His contemporary landscapes have been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in galleries in New York, Vermont, California, Georgia, South Carolina and several other southeastern states.  His upcoming participation in Morton Fine Art’s Beyond Yesterday: A Collection of Landscape Memories marks his exhibition debut in Washington, DC.

MAYA FREELON ASANTE, accompanied by the natural environment of Baltimore City, presents Scattered to the Wind on Saturday, April 27th, 2013 at 1:00pm. A one-of-a-kind kinetic art performance which boasts free-falling art for all, at Bromo Selzter Arts Tower, located at 21 S. Eutaw Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Come and witness the act of letting go and the beauty of now, as MAYA FREELON ASANTE leads us through an interactive experience that highlights both the fragility and strength of art. The performance will take place outdoors from approximately 1:00pm-1:30pm.

About MAYA FREELON ASANTE:

MAYA FREELON ASANTE is an award-winning artist whose artwork was described by poet Maya Angelou as “visualizing the truth about the vulnerability and power of the human being.” Her unique tissue paper art has been described by the International Review of African American Art as a “vibrant, beating assemblage of color” and she was selected by Modern Luxury Magazine as Best of D.C. 2013 and by the Huffington Post’s “Black Artists: 30 Contemporary Art Makers Under 40 You Should Know”.

She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally including Paris, Ghana, and US Embassies in Madagascar, Italy, Jamaica, and Swaziland. She has been a professor of art at Towson University and has attended numerous residencies including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Korobitey Institute and Brandywine Workshop. She earned a BA from Lafayette College and an MFA from the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

“Nsibidi” is the philosophy where sign systems are used to  convey ideas. Nigerian artist Victor Ekpuk uses symbols from the traditional African  writing system, such as nsibidi, along with designs he coins and others he’s gathered from the world  around him to create his artwork.
The script that results from this is meant to create a  feeling and understanding of the human experience. One symbol in a painting or drawing can represent  a concept and make a statement; many symbols can form a narrative about life in the contemporary  world.
Ekpuk will be holding a two-day drawing performance in the Turchin Center for the  Visual Arts’ Mayer Gallery April 3 and 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a break between 12:30 and  1:30 p.m. All visitors are welcome to stop by anytime during these hours to watch him in the  gallery.
His exhibition, “Drawing Memories,” opens at the Turchin Center on April 5 during the Spring Exhibition Celebration being held from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information on the opening, visit http://www.tcva.org/calendar/events/826.

About Victor Ekpuk

Ekpuk holds  a BFA from the University of Ife in Nigeria and was an illustrator for several years at a major  Nigerian newspaper.

While he began with an exploration of “traditional symbols,” his work  has evolved to embrace a wider spectrum of meaning that is equally rooted in African and global  contemporary art. The subject matter of Ekpuk’s art deals with the human condition explained through  themes that are both universal and specific: family, gender, politics, culture and  identity.

His works have been featured at the first Johannesburg Biennale in South Africa;  Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C.; New Museum in New York;  Newark Museum, New Jersey; Yerba Buena Art Center, San Francisco; Barbican Gallery, London; Fowler  Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles; and the World Bank, Washington, D.C., among others.

Currently,  Ekpuk works from his studio in Washington, D.C., and some of his artworks are in the collection of  the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Newark Museum, the World Bank and private  collections.
